pasture pens to let pairs out after they had nursed. Hit the hay early (9:30) as soon as I came home. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 Slept ‘til 6:15, made breakfast and did a bit of computer work while awaiting the sun. Out the door about 7 and it began misting a bit. Picked up the hydraulic chute from the Corbin and moved it to the Ladd Place, where we will work the fi rstcalf heifer pairs tomorrow. Saddled Buck to treat a few bad eyes later in the day and headed to town to record a bull sale ad at our local radio station. Got a trailer tire fi xed and my hair cut while I was in town. Picked up the rest of the panels from yesterday and carried them to the Ladd Place for tomorrow. Took a quick shower at home and headed to Eureka for dinner with the kids at the high school football game. Eureka was getting shut out by halftime, and it started pouring, so we exited early. Unfortunately the rain must have built up over town, so we only got a few sprinkles at the ranch. Made a few fi nal preparations for tomorrow, chatted with Amy, and called it a day about 10:00. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 5:30 wakeup, put on coffee and breakfast and headed out to saddle horses. Ava and Lyle are going to help work the pairs today, so I saddled their horses as well. Headed back into house to wake kids and eat a bite. Got everyone loaded and arrived at the Ladd Place at 7. Again, it’s awfully dark, but we trotted out to gather pairs and there was just enough light to see them as we got to the back side of the trap. Drove Nord Fork into ground and started dragging calves mid-morning. We had a different crew today, but all went fairly well. Had one scare, as Lyle got his hand caught in a dally for a few seconds. He ended up with a couple scrapes and a good bruise, but it could have been a lot worse. Finished working calves about 11:30, The Tom & Carolyn Perrier family (by family, L to R): Russ, Michele, Alice and Luke Callejo (Michele is the author’s sister); Kelly, Drew, Mark and Lauren Perrier (Mark is the author’s brother); Tom & Carolyn Perrier (seated); Matt, Amy, Ava, Lyle, Hannah and Henry Perrier. and took a quick photo of today’s crew. Our family has historically taken two things to extremes: work and photography, but we rarely comingle them by taking photos of our work. Today, we fi nally took a couple of minutes to let the two intertwine. Eric and I took the pairs back to pasture about noon and everyone else cleaned up the barn and working area. Amy showed up with homebaked pizza for everyone and Mom brought cookies, so we had a nice lunch by the trailer. Put the horses away, got Lyle’s hand bandaged and took him to the neighbor’s for a birthday party. Caught up on some house cleaning/organizing the rest of the afternoon and went to El Dorado with friends, Faith and Tyson, for dinner. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25 Up at 7, made coffee and waffl es for the kids. Felt nice to sleep in. Early church today, so I started helping get everyone cleaned up and dressed.
