innings! These guys just never give up. After checking the calving pasture, I got to headquarters and started setting up the clipping chute to shear and torch the sale bulls. Eric was taking care of a few unforeseen items at the north end of the ranch, so I started clipping a few bulls on my own. Shearing bulls is a two or three person gig, so I quit till I had some more help. I went to Dad’s offi ce to print fall cow information for a customer coming later in the morning. The customers arrived about 10:30 and looked through the sale bulls. We grabbed lunch in Eureka and went to see the fall pairs. Got back to Headquarters about 2:00 and started clipping bulls with Eric and Monroe. Quit at 5:30 to attend Parent Teacher meetings. Got home at 10:00, listened to the last of the World Series game… Royals won again! Gave the horses some hay and called it a day about 10:30. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 Up at 6 and made breakfast on a cool, crisp morning. Picked up Eric and gathered supplies for vaccinating and synchronizing fall heifers later in the morning. Clipped the last six bulls in the pen we started yesterday afternoon and then started processing heifers. Ate lunch early (before 11) and then went back to clipping bulls. Met Amy at Mom & Dad’s about 6:00 so the kids could “trick or treat” at the grandparents’ house. Headed home for pizza and washed off a few layers of bulls’ hair, dirt and smoke. Visited with a customer about sale bulls and returned several emails requesting information about the same info. I was beat, so crashed in bed at 9:00. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30 Up at 5:30… you know the drill by now. Saddled Caliente, and Eric rolled in at 7:15. We gathered ET donor and recipient pairs to pull CIDRs from donors. Roped and treated a bad eye or two in the weaned heifers on pasture. Started clipping bulls about noon. Got through all but about 13 head and quit at 6:00. Amy took the three youngest kids to her folks’ home for the weekend. I dropped Ava off at a Halloween party and I went to eat dinner with Mom & Dad in town. We watched the Royals game and had a nice visit with some neighbors. Picked Ava up from her party about 10:00 and we headed home to a very quiet house. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31 6:00; coffee, a bowl of cereal, and I was out the door just before dawn. I just had to ID and weigh baby calves and then clip the last dozen bulls at Matt Perrier at the chute. 70 I WORKING RANCH I APRIL / MAY 2016
