DR. RON GILL
Fenceline weaned calves
get down to a price level where someone
is willing to gamble on them,” says
Lichtie. Most of the added profi t on
any set of calves simply comes from
the fact there’s more competition for
good quality pre-conditioned calves.
Buyers always have more confi
dence in cattle that have been
weaned and have all their vaccinations
because those calves are more
apt to stay healthy. There is consistency
the buyer can depend on. “A lot
of this goes back to the reputation of
the rancher. If the buyer gets a set of
cattle that perform well and don’t get
sick, he’ll come back and bid on them
again next year,” says Lichtie.
He encourages ranchers who wants
to increase profi ts to look at all the programs
and see what might work in their
own operation. “If they have questions,
they can call our offi ce or local rep in
their area and we can provide data
or put them in touch with another
rancher who is doing this—to see how
it’s worked for that rancher,” he offers.
“One thing we’ve started to highlight
recently is BQA certifi cation.
Many packers are saying they want
to buy BQA-certifi ed cattle. Feedlots
have asked us to identify those herds.
If a rancher has been through BQA
certifi cation he/she knows how vaccine
must be handled; it can’t be left
in the sun while working cattle, and
must be administered a certain way.”
This helps ensure that the animals
will actually be able to mount immunity
when vaccinated. This will be
another selling point when marketing
calves in the future.
