McCurry Angus Ranch in Kansas fi lls us in on
what it takes to put a purebred bull sale together
BY MARY MCCURRY
elcome to McCurry
Angus Ranch! Our ranch
is built on over 91 years
of Angus heritage; however,
my husband, Andy
and I (both 3rd generation purebred
Angus breeders) started as a fi rst generation
start-up operation upon our
marriage in 1977 with just seven
Angus females and not much else.
Andy (KSU Animal Science graduate)
decided to apply to pharmacy school,
got accepted, and commuted for three
years to the University of Kansas,
graduating in 1990 at the age of 40.
His motto is “never say you can’t!”
I stayed on the farm with our two
children, John (age 5 at the time)
and Emily (age 2), and calved cows/
maintained the herd during the week.
My career as Director of Research &
Development for Doskocil Foods
(now Tyson Foods) included working
with the Top 100 Food companies in
the US to develop products for their
meat protein needs.
Emily and her husband, Tyson
Mullen(a pharmacist, too), own/operate
a pharmacy and gift store in Ulysses,
KS, and she also holds a BSN in Nursing/
BS in Human Biology… they have two
children; Avery, 8 and Hallie Sue, 5.
In 2004, our son, John, returned
home from college (Kansas State
University) to earn his living and
assume the lead role in the operation.
He and his wife, Melody, and their
three children (Aubree, 8; Molly, 4 ½;
Drew 2) are now the 5th generation
