two days dedicated to videoing sale
bulls which are in Potwin, KS - 40
mile drive. John & guys loading up
three vehicles – straw bales to bed
video pen, horses, riders.
New twist: preparing on “how” to
heat machine shed (not insulated) for
the sale – a fi rst! Usually putting up
fans! Calling neighbors/friends to borrow
different kinds of heating units.
Cleaned clerking area/room in
machine shed (usually pump room/
heated storage). Andy back to work at
pharmacy today. I blew a fuse on the
Cannonball bale bed feeding cows…
FRIDAY, MARCH 8TH
8 a.m. Drive to Kingman, KS for the
fuse with a hay bale stuck on the back.
The quick fuse replacement turns into
a 2+ hour repair. Those folks are so
nice there. Donated the bale of hay to
quicken the trip home! Semi loaded
with hay again for Missouri. Hay
grinding/processing going on. “Sale”

on-line sale. Accountant sent fi nancial
statement for review… need to
update new purchase 160 acre pasture
adjoining our farm in January. The
paperwork never stops! John & his
crew videoing bulls in Potwin… last
day! Andy worked at the farm in the
a.m. and then headed to pharmacy
to work… he gets home at 9:00 p.m.
SATURDAY, MARCH 9TH
John & family going early… taking
steers to Reno County, KS 4-H weigh-in
for Aubree who’s in 1st year of 4-H.
The “shuffl e” is on moving cattle
around at home to make room for the
sale bulls. New baby calf born, feeding
cows… and waiting on the word when
semis will be pulling in to unload bulls!
Bulls arrived at the same time as some
potential bull buyers!
Melody raked the entire machine
shed. Clerking room readied. Andy
brings home pizzas to bake for supper
(too tired to cook). Continue to mail
catalogs and hope they arrive ahead
of sale day!
SUNDAY, MARCH 10TH
Daylight savings time last night!
One hour of lost sleep… and everyone
is “off” schedule, especially with
feeding times of cattle/horses. Today is
cool, windy and cloudy! Andy at the

bulls, getting yearling weights and
changing out their ear tags and replacing
with their lot # in the catalog/sale.
Friends helping bring bulls in, staging
them. Potential bull customers from
Oklahoma came by to look at bulls
(they couldn’t come to the sale). Warm
enough no ice to be chopped on water
troughs… yeah!!!! And conditions
just right to hook up pasture rake and
neighbor Tom worked on the area for
sale day parking and one of our pastures…
unbelievable since they were
covered in 5 inches of snow on Sunday!
Raided the fridge for supper....
MONDAY, MARCH 11TH
Set-up by 9 a.m. for vet to semen
check ALL bulls today… strategy – get
it done as close to sale day as you can.
