Today, their outfit consists of nearly 300 cows and replacements spread throughout various locations in the northern edge of the Flint Hills. The ranch is operated by John and his wife, Annette, along with their son Lance and his wife, Lynette, and their son Austin and wife, Shenan, and infant daughter, Dorothy. “We run about 3,000 acres of ground,” John shares. “About 2,400 of it is family-owned ground, and the balance is rented.” John’s passion for cattle marketing has found its way to the next generation of cattlemen in his family. While both boys were still in school and members of 4-H, they took the initiative to purchase a handful of purebred Simmental and Angus females, went to AI school and laid a foundation for a seedstock operation known today as Cline Cattle Company. Annette’s father had given each grandson a commercial heifer for Christmas while they were growing up, and the addition of the purebred females allowed them to diversify their production base and sales opportunities. Today, the Cline herd is split equally between commercial Angusbased cows and a group of Angus, Red Angus, Hereford and Simmental purebred females. Commercial offspring are marketed through the salebarn, and the boys also offer select groups of bred heifers AI-mated to calving ease sires at several of the monthly special cow sales hosted at Manhattan Commission Company. After several years of private treaty sales, Lance and Austin finally realized part of their dream a few years back when they hosted their first bull sale at the stockyards with their dad on the auctioneer block. NEVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT GOING FULL-TIME The path John took in order to find his calling was filled with its share of twists and turns. With only a small Today, the Cline herd is split equally between commercial Angus-based cows and a group of Angus, Red Angus, Hereford and Simmental purebred females.
