h, spring. Warmer weather, fence fi xing, moving
cattle to pasture and... no water! Don’t forget about
that yearly windmill maintenance.
First and foremost, be safe when working on or
around the windmill. Always wait until the weather
is calm. If you are not comfortable going up the tower, hire a
professional. If you are, use a fall protection harness ($200 fallprotectionpros.
com) and leapfrog your way safely to the top.
Check that all nuts and bolts are tight before climbing the
ladder. The oil should be changed once a year using SAE 10 or
less non-detergent. Make sure there is plenty of grease in the
bearings. Cylinder leathers should be replaced every two to six
years depending on how much sand the well produces.
Taking a little extra time each year can save the frustration of
having to haul water and spending more on repairs. As the saying
goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
