HERE: This one is bred. BELOW: This little Angus is quite photogenic! Darian’s business name is RARE Ultrasound. RARE is short for Roghair Angus Ranch Enterprises, which is the name of her family’s ranch. DARIAN ROGHAIR, SOUTH DAKOTA, AGE 17 This ranch girl’s sidebusiness takes a peek at what your cow is carrying ANNALEE ROGHAIR, AGE 14 ne of the fi rst signs that fall is fi nally here is that tingle in the air and the new colors of the trees. Another sign is how busy it gets! For ranchers, it’s one of the busiest times of the year. Fall vaccinations, shipping calves and bringing cows to the home place are just a few of the jobs that need to be accomplished. It’s also the time of year that I keep my ultrasound gear charged up and ready to go. I live with my fi ve little sisters and my parents, Brad and Shawna, on a cattle ranch near Okaton, South Dakota. My family raises registered Black Angus cattle and we also have a commercial herd. For the past few years we have raised Black Angus bulls, as well as a few select Red Angus bulls that we sell. Since all of us girls play a big part in the work on the ranch, Dad and Mom homeschool us. Homeschool is great, as it gives us plenty of time to help out around the ranch, and if I were not homeschooled, I probably wouldn’t be running my own ultrasound business. My interest in ultrasound began when Dad hired someone to ultrasound our cows. I loved to watch and I was full of questions as to how the machine worked, how he could tell if the cow was bred and what all the different shapes on the screen were. Soon I was able to identify bred or open cows. After that, my 22 I WORKING RANCH JUNIOR I SUMMER 2017
